Fabricating a freeform mesh of a pelican using stainless steel tube and ball joints

Callan Morgan from Pelican Studios and Ravi Bessabava from Swinburne University have collaborated on the design and fabrication of a sculpture from ball joints and stainless steel tube. The pelican was modelled in Rhino and Grasshopper, and sequences of nodes and struts were streamed to the HoloLens to use as guides for fabrication using Fologram. Richard Kickbush shot and edited a timelapse and some awesome stylized shots of the finished result.

The project is a beautiful illustration of complexity that becomes possible in the combination of digital model with skilled steelwork and craft, and the techniques and structure could easily be scaled up to larger structures.
